Graduate Programs

Two graduate programs are currently provided by the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. These are:

• Master of Science Program and Doctor of Philosophy Program in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (International Program)
• Doctor of Philosophy Program in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Double Degree Program with Kumamoto University, optional)

Program Overview:

The Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University established the Department of Biochemistry in 1975 to teach general biochemistry to medical and paramedical students. The Department has continuously advanced its teaching objectives and research goals. The Master’s and PhD programs in Medical Biochemistry began in 1997 and 1999, respectively. In 2009, the programs have been renamed, “Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology”. At least 50 graduates have accomplished from this program. Our program is appropriately in line with current knowledge at all times.

Program Philosophy:

Master degree level:

Knowledge in education and research, transmitted dissemination and exchange of knowledge in the field of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and related disciplines in both national and international levels, the moral and social consciousness.

PhD graduates:

Ability to analyze, criticize the work; planning and construction of research in biochemistry and molecular biology and related fields independently; can achieve high academic quality, initiate the new knowledge and technical progress that can be distributed internationally, the moral and social consciousness

Program Learning Outcomes:

Master degree level:

The Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Curriculum (updated 2022), an international MSc program, have the following program learning outcomes (PLOs):

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of fundamental theories and practices in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MBMB) and related fields.

2. Students will be able to use research processes (evaluate data critically, design experiments to test hypotheses) relevant to the practice of MBMB, to operate effectively in the laboratory and academically.

3. Students will be able to effectively communicate scientific data and ideas in English at the international level.

4. Students will be proficient in using computational tools, information technology, and other online resources for self-studying.

5. Students will demonstrate work ethics, discipline, and responsibility toward self, society, and country.

6. Students will be able to work effectively in teams.

หลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตรมหาบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาชีวเคมีทางการแพทย์และชีววิทยาโมเลกุล หลักสูตรนานาชาติ (หลักสูตรปรับปรุง พ.ศ. 2565) มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อผลิตมหาบัณฑิตที่มีคุณสมบัติดังนี้ 

(1)        มีความรู้ความเข้าใจในหลักการและทฤษฎีสำคัญในสาขาชีวเคมีทางการแพทย์และชีววิทยาโมเลกุล รวมทั้งสาขาที่เกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์กัน

(2)        มีความสามารถในการใช้กระบวนการวิจัยในการวิเคราะห์หรือแก้ปัญหาการปฏิบัติงานหรือปัญหาทางวิชาการ

(3)        มีความสามารถในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในการสื่อสารและเผยแพร่ความรู้ทางวิชาการในระดับนานาชาติได้

(4)        มีความสามารถในการใช้เทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์และสารสนเทศในการแสวงหาความรู้ด้วยตนเอง

(5)        มีวินัย ซื่อสัตย์ และรับผิดชอบต่อตนเอง สังคม และประเทศชาติ

(6)        สามารถทำงานร่วมกับผู้อื่นได้

PhD graduates:

The Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Curriculum (updated 2017), an international PhD program, have the following program learning outcomes (PLOs):

1. Students will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of key theories and practices in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MBMB) and related fields according to the professional standard.

2. Students will be able to use research processes, mathematical and statistical methods, to solve research problems and derive novel knowledge and deliver the work for the development of their research field.

3. Students will be able to effectively communicate, convey, and publish scientific data and academic ideas in English at the international level.

4. Students will be proficient in using computational tools, information technology, and other online resources for self-studying and creating academic output.

5. Students will demonstrate work ethics, discipline, and responsibility toward self, society, and country. 6. Students will demonstrate capability in leadership and understanding of diverse global cultures and be able to work effectively in an international team.

หลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตรดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาชีวเคมีทางการแพทย์และชีววิทยาโมเลกุล หลักสูตรนานาชาติ (หลักสูตรปรับปรุง พ.ศ. 2560) มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อผลิตมหาบัณฑิตที่มีคุณสมบัติดังนี้ 

(1)        มีความรู้ความเข้าใจเชิงลึกในหลักการและทฤษฎีสำคัญในสาขาวิชาชีวเคมีทางการแพทย์และชีววิทยาโมเลกุล รวมทั้งสาขาที่เกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์กันตามมาตรฐานวิชาชีพ

(2)        มีความสามารถในการวิจัย ใช้คณิตศาสตร์และสถิติ เพื่อแก้ปัญหาที่ซับซ้อนหรือสร้างองค์ความรู้ใหม่และถ่ายทอดเพื่อให้เกิดการพัฒนาในสาขาวิชาการหรือวิชาชีพของตนเองได้

(3)        มีความสามารถในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในการสื่อสาร ผลิตผลงานทางวิชาการ เผยแพร่และถ่ายทอดความรู้

ทางวิชาการในระดับนานาชาติได้

(4)        มีความสามารถในการใช้เทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์และสารสนเทศในการแสวงหาความรู้ และสร้างสรรค์ผลงานทางวิชาการด้วยตนเอง

(5)        มีวินัย ซื่อสัตย์ และรับผิดชอบต่อตนเอง สังคม และประเทศชาติ

(6)        มีภาวะผู้นำ เข้าใจในความแตกต่างหลากหลายทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรม สามารถทำงานร่วมกับผู้อื่น ได้ทั่วโลก

Program Structure:

Master of Science in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

This is a 2-year program:

• Plan A, Type A2 includes; a thesis is equal to or more than 18 credits and course work of no less than 18 credits.

Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

This is a 3- to 4-year program:

• Program 1
  • Type 1.1 focuses on research only and additional course work without credit. Applicants must hold a Master degree in Medical Physiology or relevant subject. This program requires at least 48 thesis credits.
• Program 2 focuses on research with additional course work.
  • Type 2.1 requires a 36-credit thesis and 12 credits of course work. Applicants holding a Master Degree are eligible to enroll.
  • Type 2.2 requires a 48-credit thesis and 24 credits of course work to qualify. Applicants holding a Bachelor Degree are eligible to enroll.

Opportunities for overseas training

PhD students, who study in this field, have opportunities on research training abroad in the short term (1-3 months) and long-term (one year), in collaboration with foreign researchers and RGJ-Ph.D. Program (Thailand Research Fund) and funding from Khon Kaen University For Graduate students. M.Sc. students can apply for the scholarship exchange to do research overseas for 3-4 months.

Careers after graduation:

Master and Doctor of Philosophy graduated from Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program are able to work in government and private organizations, such as teachers, researchers, scholars, public relations or as a product specialist / product manager in a company that sells products of science. The graduates of this field at the doctoral level can work as researchers (Postdoctoral fellows) in other countries.

For Master and PhD programs, additional requirements are as follows:

• Master Degree Program, applicant must hold a Bachelor of Science or equivalent qualification with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or above.
• Doctor of Philosophy Program, applicants must hold a Master of Science or be in the final semester of a Master of Science in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or relevant subject with a GPA of 3.5 or above for Program 1.1, or 3.25 or above for Program 2.1. Program 2.2, applicants must hold (or be in the final semester of a Bachelor of Science or equivalent with a GPA of 3.25 or equivalent, or on the 20% top of the class.
• Applicants taking the Master of Science in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program, having at least 15 credits with a GPA of 3.5 or above, are entitled to transfer to the Doctor of Philosophy Program.
